Following DC Comics’ announcement of a special one-shot and variant covers to celebrate Pride Month this June, Marvel Comics announced its own plans. In a release published Friday, Marvel Comics announced Marvel Voices: Pride #1, a one-shot comic celebrating the characters and creators of the LGBTQIA+ community. Pride #1 will be Marvel’s first-ever queer-centric comic special and will feature the stories from a star-studded list of creators including. Tini Howard, Steve Orlando, Kieron Gillen, Vita Ayala and more.
Marvel Voices: Pride #1 will feature stories focusing on some of the Marvel Universe’s favorite LGBTQIA characters, including stories involving Mystique & Destiny, Iceman, Daken, and more. Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung will also make their return to Marvel to write a story featuring Wiccan and Hulkling. Marvel will also use the special to highlight some of the special moments in Marvel’s history of inclusion and support of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Marvel Voices: Pride #1 is set to release on June 23 in comic shops and digitally.
New Variant Covers Announced
Marvel also announced on Friday the legendary artist Phil Jimenez will be producing a line of variant covers in honors of Pride Month. these variants will feature LGBTQIA+ characters including:
- America Chavez (seen above)
- Black Cat
- Daken
- Hulkling & Wiccan
- Iceman
- Moondragon
- Mystique
- Northstar
- The new Valkyrie who made her debut in KING IN BLACK: RETURN OF THE VALKYRIES — learn her true name in THE MIGHTY VALKYRIES #1, on sale in April.
“As an (ahem!) older gay creator, I’m always thrilled by the opportunity to draw iconic LGBTQ+ characters from Marvel’s past and present, and grateful to contribute to Marvel’s future: one that truly represents the world — and the wonderful diversity of humanity — right outside your window,” Jimenez said in the statement.
